It’s a very special day today– the release date of Unraveling by Sara Ella, the second installment in the Unblemished trilogy!
Eighteen-year-old Eliyana Ember has had her entire world turned upside down– she was falsely told her mother had died, the neighbor boy she’s had a crush on for years is now her fiancé, and, oh yeah, she’s now the Queen of the Second Reflection, a world she didn’t know existed until a few months ago. Just when she feels that things are starting to become more stable, she realizes that her soul is irreparably linked to her other love interest, Ky, and her coronation turns into tragedy. Soon, the thresholds begin to drain and everyone’s magical and healing Callings begin to fail, and it becomes apparent that the Verity and Void will battle it out until the very end. There is no clear-cut way that good can beat out darkness, but it is clear that Eliyana must be the one to save the dimensions before the Callings disappear all together.
I will be forever amazed at the world-building Sara Ella manages to do within 350 pages. I’m someone who needs a lot of help to imagine these mythical worlds, and she manages to create these insanely elaborate Dimensions without over-explaining. Not to mention the balance that she creates between these vastly different worlds.
I also give major props to Sara Ella for mastering the often-abhorred trope of the YA love triangle. I typically hate these types of storylines, but she manages to write the El-Ky-Joshua story in a way that makes me feel complexly and deeply about each character and doesn’t make it feel overdone or cheesy. I also really love that El is her own person throughout all of this– she recognizes her own power and autonomy and does not change herself for these men, something that I feel is missing in many YA fantasies. Girl power! Oh, and for the record: #TeamKy all the way!
I’m not giving Unraveling a perfect 5 stars, mostly because I’m a bit too picky when it comes to YA fantasy, but it still gets an incredible 4 stars from me. I cannot wait until Unbreakable, the third book in the Unblemished trilogy, is released!
PS. I was sent a copy of this book by Thomas Nelson in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts in this review are my own.
